calloc() on a large buffer should use a clean MAP_ANONYMOUS which should not break overcommit. If it doesn't, then that is a problem.
Yes I would have thought that calloc() could be more clever in this situation, but on 2.6.40.4-5.fc15.x86_64 glibc-2.14.1-6.x86_64 at least it blows up.
